Kerrie Norman was appointed as the Partnerships for Schools (PfS) Project Director in October 2007 to deliver new and remodelled buildings for this fast-track sponsored academy. It was one of the first academies to be delivered under the responsibility of PfS (now the Education Funding Agency). The expectations of the Sponsors had to be heavily managed, as they were hoping for a 100% new build solution, but had been awarded 75% new build funding. There was a high risk of an unidentified mineshaft being present under the planned location of the new buildings and Kerrie agreed an unusual set of intrusive surveys, sinking boreholes at 1m centres, to reduce the unidentified mineshaft risk to the Contractor. This thorough and pragmatic approach was successful in managing these risks and enabled the lump sum Design & Build contract to be signed on time, as well as providing a level of comfort that allowed the Contractor to increase the amount of new build to 88%, within the original budget for the scheme. Kerrie also coordinated in-depth curriculum modelling and the production of a design brief that maximised informal learning spaces within a tight gross floor area. The Contractor and their Design Team developed an innovative heart space for dining, performance and assembly uses and the design was continually tested to ensure this pivotal space could practically deliver all the core functions intended.
