Promoting Careers in Civil Engineering – Giving Help & Advice

Flinders Chase recently helped give careers advice to school children in West Lancashire by manning the Institution of Civil Engineers stand at the “Future in STEM” Event; hosted by Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College, in Skelmersdale.

The event took place at the end of November 2013, and was attended by a number of schools from the West Lancashire area, and the civil engineering stand was visited by more than 60 students at various stages in their education.  The advice they were looking for ranged from wanting a basic understanding of what civil engineering is; through to how they can get apprenticeships and what aspects of their curriculum are most relevant if they wish to become civil engineers.

Civil engineering was just one of many science, technology and engineering disciplines represented at the event which runs annually; and is organised by teaching staff at the college.

We were really pleased to support this event; it’s well organised and the students really get good advice and help from all the exhibitors.  As a locally based company with projects all over the UK, it’s important not just to our business, but to our industry, that we help to grow the next generation of civil engineers right here on our doorstep.  I was particularly encouraged by the interest expressed by young girls, who were interested in finding out about civil engineering and considering it as an alternative to post-16 courses that are popular for girls in the area, such as hair and beauty.” says Director Kerrie Norman.
